On February 8, Adrián was out for a memorable father-son kayaking trip off the southern coast of Chile in Patagonia, paddling the chill waters of the Strait of Magellan. Kayaking by itself can be a serene experience, but this adventure came with an unexpected encounter of the massive kind.
Whales: The Gentle Giants
Humpback whales, as described by the International Whaling Commission, can reach lengths between 38 and 50 feet and weigh up to 40 tons. They have gentle reputations, mostly feasting on krill and small fish. Despite their size, they’re non-aggressive to humans, although their curiosity sometimes leads to closer encounters.
“These gentle giants rarely pose a threat to humans. They tend to avoid direct contact with people or boats, but their curiosity can lead them to approach closely,” notes BBC Wildlife.

In the rarest of moments, as Adrián and his father, Meydell, ventured through the icy strait, a massive humpback decided to satisfy its curiosity, resulting in a spectacular and somewhat alarming display caught on camera.
Meydell started filming around his son, entranced by waves he thought were picturesque at the time. Little did he know, those waves were a sign that a humpback whale was about to emerge nearby.
The Lunge Feed
Humpbacks have a unique feeding style called lunge feeding. They open their vast mouths and surge forward, capturing fish and water in dramatic fashion. This spectacular maneuver was precisely what Adrián found himself involved in, though unwittingly.
As Meydell heard an intense sound similar to a wave crashing, he was alarmed to turn around and find no sight of his son or the kayak, which had vanished into the depths.
The Moment Inside the Whale
Sucked into the giant’s mouth, Adrián’s experience inside was strange and overwhelming. He described brief seconds in “a slimy cavity” filled with odd noises and a strong, disorienting pull. Fortunately, the structure of a humpback’s throat makes swallowing anything larger than a fist impossible. Realizing his mistake, the whale promptly spat Adrián out.
Meydell recounted to CNN how relief washed over him seeing Adrián resurface, clinging to the inflatable kayak now separated from the whale’s mouth.
“Keep calm and grab the boat!” Meydell shouted, ensuring his son reached safety, looking increasingly likely as Adrián paddled to his father, distancing themselves from the giant but gentle creature.

Reflecting with a sense of humor, Adrián likened his experience to Pinocchio being swallowed by Monstro. Though shocked, he realized quickly that the whale merely followed its instincts, not intending harm.
