Steven Segal was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 10, 1952, to Samuel, a high school math teacher, and Patricia, a medical technician. The soulful sound of the blues captivated Seagal from an early age and sparked a deep interest in music.
This musical influence stayed with him for a long time. When he was 5, his family moved to Fullerton, California. Siegel suffered from asthma and weakness as a child, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams. Legend has it that Segal even lied about his age to get a job as a dishwasher at a restaurant.
Impressed by his dexterity and quick reflexes, the chef decided to teach him karate. After graduating high school at the age of 17, Segal made the life-changing decision to leave the United States. He went to Japan in 1968, where he taught English and continued to hone his martial arts skills.
Seagal devoted himself entirely to martial arts, demonstrating an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He lived in Japan for 15 years, and by the time he left, he had established himself as a highly respected practitioner in his field.
Seagal gradually became a celebrity, appearing on the covers of several martial arts magazines. Furthermore, he made history as the first Westerner to open a dojo in Japan. This dojo functioned as a “self-defense training center.”
Seagal earned black belts in karate, judo, kendo, and aikido, demonstrating his mastery of these martial arts systems.
However, as a Westerner traveling to Japan to study martial arts, Segal initially faced challenges. Many Westerners believed that they could pay someone to learn some skills and then return to the United States to teach what they had learned.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple. Before returning to the United States in 1984, Segal spent 15 years immersed in Japanese culture and martial arts traditions. He set up his own dojo on American soil with stuntman Craig Dunn.
Seagal was shocked to learn that American martial arts instructors were promoting a shallow “fast food style” of martial arts. He also mocked the famous actor Chuck Norris for his martial arts talent shown in the film.
To solve this problem, Siegel founded his own martial arts school with the intention of restoring the authenticity and depth of traditional martial arts. Soon after, she made the momentous decision to move from New Mexico to Los Angeles to pursue her acting dreams.
In West Hollywood, Segal founded an Aikido dojo with his eldest son, Haruo Matsuoka, whom he had brought with him from Japan. He was also the coordinator for the wrestling program. Steven Seagal suddenly became famous as an action movie star.
Throughout the 1990s, he played Marine counterterrorism specialist Casey Ryback in films such as Under Siege (1992) and Under Siege 2 (1995). The enormous success of these films, which grossed an astonishing $160 million worldwide, catapulted Seagal to international celebrity status.

Dominic is the couple’s son and Annalize and Arissa are their daughters.
Seagal and LeBrock divorced in 1996, but claims surfaced that Seagal had an affair with his children’s nanny, Arissa Wolf, while they were still married. Segal’s decision to leave Japan and return to the United States appears to have resulted in a broken relationship with his children.
