LaToya, at 39, couldn’t contain her happiness and relief when she spoke to the Tampa Bay Times, saying, “Being a homeowner now, I can be at home.” Her journey to this moment was filled with hurdles. The struggle involved sharing a cramped space at her mother’s house, taking turns sleeping on a bed, while juggling work as a nursing assistant.
This new house marks a significant turning point for LaToya and her son. “I can be at peace,” she shared. “I can bring sweet memories to my house and I can have my family and my friends over. I have a home now, and that’s something that I’ve always wanted for my son, and for myself. It’s been a long, hard journey. Struggle and sacrifices, but we made it.”
LaToya is the proud 173rd homeowner to benefit from Dunn’s heartfelt initiative. The foundation’s mission was inspired by Dunn’s own life story, filled with trials and resilience. When Dunn was mere days from turning 18, his world was shattered by the tragic loss of his mother, Betty Smothers, who was fatally shot during a robbery. This heartbreak forced young Dunn into an early adulthood, taking responsibility for his five siblings. Such experiences cultivated a profound understanding of the struggles single mothers endure.
When Dunn remembers his mother, his voice carries a mixture of love and admiration. “She was compassionate, she was kind, she was helpful, thoughtful. She was everything that I would want in my wife.
