It can be very scary to think about what happens after we die. So I love stories that make us think about how we want to spend our time on Earth.

I’ve seen some really cool but true stories, like a new mom who came back to life after giving birth when she felt her newborn’s heartbeat in her chest. It can only be described as a miracle.

But when someone has suffered for a long time, it is easy for loved ones to lose hope and even wonder if it would be better to let them go. That’s exactly what happened to 12-year-old Martin Pistorius from South Africa after he suddenly fell ill with a degenerative disease that left him in a vegetative state.
For 12 years, Pistorius was trapped in his own body. He believes he woke up around the age of 14 or 15, but the people around him thought he had no idea about the world around him.

He even heard his mother say she wanted him dead, but he knew it was heartbreaking to see her son suffer in silence. In the following NBC interview, we find out what life has been like for Pistorius after being stuck in his thoughts for over a decade.
