Goldie Hawn has opened up about the day she met Harvey Weinstein after they broke off their previous ‘deal’.
In the late 1980s, Weinstein’s production company Miramax attempted to adapt the legendary Broadway musical Chicago into a film. Horn played Velma Kelly and Madonna played Roxie Hart.
While the film was in development, Weinstein submitted an alternate script with 23-year-old Velma Jr. in the lead role. Hawn was 20 years older at the time.
“Harvey put them in Madonna’s way and mine,” Hawn said in a new interview with Variety. “‘Don’t bewitch me,’ I said, because I know exactly what you’re doing. We reached an agreement”.
The film ultimately flopped, and Weinstein recast it with Renee Zellweger as Roxy and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma. The following year, the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
To Hawn’s delight, the now disaffected media mogul finally paid her the previously agreed amount for her work.
“When you take on a bully, sometimes you win,” he said. “Later I said to him, ‘You know what the best thing you can pay for?’ It’s not about money. You have restored my faith in morality and decency.
“He finally picked up his karma,” he continued.
Weinstein served decades in prisons in Los Angeles and New York on sexual assault charges.
“Acting roles were always chosen based on what was best for the film aesthetically and financially,” he told the prison publication.
“We thought we did our best in Chicago, and we’re proud of that, and we’re thrilled that Goldie’s experience was positive and that she has the strength to say so in this climate. “I just wanted to thank you.”
