Heartbreaking Loss: 14-Year-Old Boy Passes Away During 5K Run

    3 Mins Read

It’s with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news of Knox MacEwen, a 14-year-old boy from Florida, who sadly passed away on November 4, 2023. Knox was participating in a 5K race when he unexpectedly collapsed.

Knox was an enthusiastic member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at his school, Western High School in Davie, Florida. This promising young life was abruptly interrupted by a cardiac arrest during the event organized by the JROTC.

After the incident, Knox was rushed to Memorial Hospital Miramar, where he was later pronounced dead, according to reports from NBC Miami.

The school’s principal, Jimmy Arrojo, expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “I am saddened to share tragic news impacting our Wildcat community. One of our JROTC students passed away this morning after being transported to the hospital. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, teachers, and classmates as they mourn this great loss.”

Jimmy also urged the school community to support the grieving family: “I ask our Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow. Please know that grief counselors will be available on campus this week for anyone in need of assistance or support.”

The JROTC, a character development program sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces, aims to equip youths with skills like self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership. Knox’s involvement in such programs reflects his commitment and enthusiasm for personal development.

A Beloved Member of the Community

Beyond his school commitments, Knox was a cherished member of the Crossway Church in Cooper City, leaving a profound mark on those who knew him. Pastor Jon Elswick offered words of comfort and reflection upon this tragic loss.

Pastor Elswick shared, “I think when you have a tragedy like this, and someone as loved as Knox, there are ripple effects throughout our church community. We have students who were friends with him, and family members who are friends with his family, so it’s been a really difficult time.”

He continued to share a poignant sentiment from Knox’s father, who said, “Knox was the best of us.” Pastor Elswick echoed, “I love that phrase because if you knew Knox, that’s who he was. This was a teenager who, when you think about him, you think of a loving kid, a caring kid, a funny kid.”

The loss of someone so young is immeasurable. Knox MacEwen may no longer be with us, but the impact he made on his community will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those grieving this tremendous loss. Rest in peace, Knox.

Take a moment to share this heartfelt story with friends and family, spreading love and remembrance for a special young soul.
