Thea and Elliot’s touching story
A chance meeting between Elliot Costello and an amazing girl named Thea in central Cambodia sparked a powerful movement to end child sexual abuse.
Thea, who paints her nails every day, asked Elliot to paint one of her nails while they were talking. Little did he know that this simple request had a deeper meaning. He later learned that Thea had been sexually assaulted. Elliot made a promise to Thea while painting his nails. It was a promise to remember her, to bear witness to her suffering and to act against the abuse suffered by countless children around the world.
Introducing the #PolishedMan movement
Motivated by Thea’s story and determined to make a difference, Elliot started the #PolishedMan movement. The movement encourages men to paint one of their nails in solidarity with the one in five children who have been sexually abused.
Simply painted nails can be a powerful conversation starter. It encourages dialogue about the prevalence of child abuse and inspires new prevention strategies. Each painted nail serves as a visual reminder of the urgent need to protect our children and the role we can all play in making a difference.
In addition to raising awareness, Elliott encourages people to donate to support educational programs and resources for child abuse survivors. Together we can give every child a chance to heal, grow and thrive.
