Steve Lawrence was a singer and actor who first made it big in the 1950’s and 1960’s with his wife Eydie Gormé. Together, they performed as the singing duo Steve and Eydie.
Aol reports that Lawrence died on Thursday March 7, 2024, at the age of 88 years old. He was at his home in Los Angeles at the time of his death.
According to Susan DuBow, a spokesperson for the family, Lawrence’s death was due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He had been battling Alzheimer’s for years and ended his touring career in 2019 because of the diagnosis.
Lawrence and Gormé got married in Las Vegas in 1957, and they remained married until Gormé’s death in 2013. Prior to that, the couple toured together until 2009. They were also TV stars in the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s.
Upon hearing the news of Lawrence’s death, many other celebrities and former colleagues shared their tributes to Lawrence. For example, Carol Burnett shared, “Steve was one of my favorite guests on my variety show appearing 39 times. He was also my very close friend… so close that I considered him ‘family.’ He will always be in my heart.”
Dionne Warwick shared, “Another longtime friend has made his transition. Steve now has joined his true love, his wife Eydie, and is resting with comfort in the arms of the Heavenly Father. My heartfelt condolences go out to both of his sons and host of friends.”
Lawrence won multiple awards during his career including a Grammy and an Emmy. He was also nominated for a Tony award.
